This fund is in honor of Dr. William "Bill" Trager, who completed his Ph.D. degree at the University of Washington in 1965. Bill joined the School of Pharmacy as an associate professor of medicinal chemistry in 1972, and served as the chairman of the department from 1980-83. Bill's major research efforts were focused in the area of drug metabolism, and he was one of the leaders in the application of mass spectrometry to studies of drug metabolism. He passed away in 2009. Hope Barnes Fellowship Fund

Hope Barnes entered the graduate program in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry in 1985. In addition to being an outstanding scholar and an ardent supporter of women in science, she was an accomplished skier, climber and competition rower. She was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic rowing team and the captain of the 1984 team. Hope lost her life in a tragic climbing accident in the Cascade Mountains in January 1991. She was awarded her Ph.D. posthumously by the UW. The purpose of the Hope Barnes Graduate Fellowship, which was established through a generous gift from her family, is to support and encourage talented graduate students in medicinal chemistry.

Bracken attended the UW College of Pharmacy in 1912 and 1913. His son, Jim L. Bracken, graduated from the UW School of Pharmacy in 1945. L.D. founded L.D. Bracken Pharmacy in 1921 and maintained thriving professional pharmacies in downtown Seattle in the Cobb Building and on First Hill. Jim joined the family business when he graduated and became president when his father died in 1954. Both men were entrepreneurs and beloved leaders in the profession.

Support for Dr. Rodney Ho's research aims. His research focuses on elucidating mechanisms of protein and drug disposition, and on understanding the genetic basis of inter-individual variation in therapeutic responses. Fundamental understanding of these physiological and biological processes guide Dr. Ho's efforts to develop drug-delivery strategies to treat AIDS and cancers with drugs, DNA, proteins and antigens.

Pharmaceutics Research (Unadkat)

Supports research in Dr. Jashvant Unadkat's laboratory, which seeks to understand the mechanisms of metabolism and the transport of antiviral and anticancer drugs to improve therapies of cancer and viral diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis C. Dr. Unadkat's laboratory has made significant advances in these fields, resulting in the development of a PET-imaging technique to determine P-glycoprotein's role at the human blood barrier in excluding drugs from the central nervous system.

William "Bill" Howald served the School of Pharmacy for almost 40 years. As lecturer in medicinal chemistry and managing technical director of the Mass Spectrometry Center, Howald was known as an outstanding and dedicated faculty and staff member who was revered as a mentor, teacher, master technician and facilities manager. This fund in his honor supports education in mass spectrometry including guest speakers, education and ancillary activities.
